Fantastic Gala, Excellent Griddle Car
Great Central Railway的点评
点评：I always love to visit the Great Central Railway and attend a number of times each year. I had another enjoyable time at the Winter Steam Gala this January.
The Griddle Car is always a highlight to the visit. It gets busy during event days and we were lucky to get a seat – they often serve in the adjacent coaches but it was so busy they were only serving in the Griddle Car itself on this occasion.
The Griddle Car breakfast featured two fried eggs which were perfectly cooked; a thick rasher of bacon; tasty sausage; a large piece of black pudding; fried bread which was very nice; as well as some tinned tomatoes and baked beans. I had been unable to enjoy this for over a year due to a back injury and I am pleased to say it was still as good as ever and I demolished it between Loughborough and Quorn!
You have to visit the Griddle Car if you visit the GCR!
The collection of engines was brilliant, with a visiting 9F from the NYMR and the impressive 257 Squadron as well as Austerity No 18. The home fleet collection is also great, and for this year's gala including the chance to ride behind Standard 2 78018 before her withdrawal for overhaul.
I always enjoy the atmosphere at the stations along the line, particularly the coal fires that are usually lit during the Winter Gala – my Mum and I enjoyed a hot chocolate next to the fire in the Loughborough refreshment room.
It’s also enjoyable to see the locos being serviced between runs next to the shed in Loughborough and I was lucky enough to see 257 Squadron being coupled to the Standard 5 before the express service early in the afternoon.
I’ve attended numerous galas at the GCR over the last few years, and I still find it an enjoyable day out. I strongly recommend a visit.
