点评:My wife and I used Friendly Planet in 2008-2009 and had an amazing experience on their best of India tour package. We recently used them again for their best of Peru tour package and had a far different experience. It seems their standards, level of service and value have changed over the years. Had we not travelled with them before and had such an exceptional experience, perhaps we wouldn't have walked away feeling shorted.
The communication from Friendly Planet prior to departure was very minimal. I think we only received two emails from them. We needed to make connection flights and after never hearing anything, I finally called the office and asked for our flight information out of Miami. The person I spoke to was kind of short with me and told me I should have already received this information. I verified email addresses for both my wife and I, which were correct, and within minutes received our flight e-tickets.
Too many early mornings. We did receive an apology in advance for multiple early morning starts, but that was just a few weeks before travel. We had to get up around 4:30 am on three different occasions during the tour and that didn't really sit well with us. Especially since we had a group dinner that was included in the package the night before one such morning. We were still out at dinner after 9pm. My wife and I ended up leaving early so that we could go back and pack. My wife was up until midnight and then we had to get up again at 4:30 am. This is just poor planning in my opinion. We ended up with a lack of sleep on multiple occasions which also caused stress. One morning, our bus left the hotel for the airport/domestic flight at 5:00 am. We were given a box breakfast which contained a ham sandwich that was about 1" x 3", some cookies, a cereal bar and a bottle of juice.
We were given bad/false information regarding an extra excursion from Friendly Planet, the Tour Manager and the Tour Guide. Our tour included Machu Picchu with an optional second visit that included a hike to Huayna Picchu which is the taller peak that overlooks Machu Picchu. After reading about the hike, I realized my wife would be unable to complete the hike due to health restrictions. When I called to speak to Friendly Planet regarding this to determine what my wife would or could be doing while I was on this hike, I was told by the Friendly Planet staff that the Huayna Picchu trail head was in a completely different area from Machu Picchu and if my wife went, she could explore this different area that also contained ruins that she would otherwise not have access to while I completed the hike. I was also told this exact same information by the Tour Manager and the Tour Guide the day the group saw Machu Picchu and the day before our optional excursion. This was simply NOT true. The trail head for the Huayna Picchu hike was within the same area our group saw during our trip to Machu Picchu. When we finally figured this out, we called the Friendly Planet office and requested a refund because we had been mislead. There simply was no "different" area my wife would be able to see without completing the hike. We were not given our $145 back. So, they either didn't know what they were talking about or they just lied. Not sure which.
We were left without a manager/guide on two different occasions. When I completed the Huayna Picchu hike, there was no representative/guide/manager from Friendly Planet with me. I was just told were to go the night before. I had totally been expecting a guide to be provided by Friendly Planet to guide me and give me information about the hike and what I was seeing in regards to the ruins. The second time we were left without guidance was at the end of the tour when the group was just dropped off at the airport. We expected the Friendly Planet representative to at least stay with us until we all got checked in. This didn't happen.
We had a ten hour train ride one day and knew nothing of it until the night before. Ten hours on a train is a long time. Especially when you're not expecting it and didn't bring anything to kill time like a book or some type of game. We all had smart phones, but of course there wasn't service on a train going through the middle of Peru between the elevation of 11,000 and 14,000'.
There was one day when the hotel checkout time was 10:00 am and our group meeting time to leave was 10:30 am. When our tour manager told us our meet up time to continue on our tour was 10:30 am, I asked him what time the hotel checkout was. He didn't know. This, again, is just poor coordination and planning.
Finally, the last hotel we stayed at was pretty bad. The rooms were very small. This was an issue because it was our last stop before leaving the country and needed extra space to organize our bags and pack. This hotels elevators were also very small and would only hold two people with luggage which became an issue because this hotel was very crowded. Probably because it was cheap? This last hotel also had very poor service at the front desk, bar and dining area. We ordered a turkey sandwich and hot wings from the bar and it took 45 minutes for the order to arrive (from the hotel dining room) while we were the only customers in the bar area. At breakfast, it was very difficult to get a table because it was so crowded and there was very little support staff available to clean tables once patrons departed. We literally had to move place settings around from different tables so we could sit together. Of the two days we ate breakfast at this hotel, we were never offered coffee and there wasn't coffee readily available. We had to walk around and look for a carafe and hope it was regular coffee and not decaf or milk. The intention was definitely that coffee would be served by the staff, but they were in small numbers. The breakfast buffet food was also often cold (eggs, potatoes) or gone. The day we left this hotel, we heard in town that it had previously been a prison. I'm not sure if this was true, but it was certainly better suited for that purpose. It did have a nice view of lake Titicaca.
Like I said, maybe if we hadn't had such a great experience with Friendly Planet many years ago in India we wouldn't have felt short changed. I'm guessing this will be our last Friendly Planet trip. They didn't even reach out to us after we got back to ask us how things went.
