点评：The Gothic ruins of a 16th century tower house are perched precariously on the side of a cliff overlooking the North Sea. This dramatic castle’s believed to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” , as he actually holidayed in the area before the castle fell into ruin - so he would’ve seen it in all it’s Gothic glory.
It was built by Francis Hay, the 9th Earl of Errol, and has been rebuilt & reconstructed a few times over the centuries. Robert Baden-Powell, Prime Ministers Asquith & Winston Churchill stayed as visitors when the castle was a high-class holiday residence. Sadly, the castle was sold to a demolition company in the 1920’s , who proceeded to gut the interior, and strip off the roof. Sacrilege!
Still, it’s an interesting ruin, with a haunting atmosphere. The sea-scenery is captivating - but be very careful here as there have been tragic falls due to steep drops. There is a car-park in the town where you can walk along a path to the castle from, or a rough car-park off the A975 where you can walk down a track to the castle from.
