点评:We had a guided tour "Meilensteine der Bach-Forschung", or in English "Breakthroughs in the study of Bach". Fascinating information about timestamping his compositions. New for me was that Bach produced a lot of new music in his initial five years, and that he experimented later with his own material over many years thereafter to repeatedly find out how it sounded with other (combinations of) instruments, dependent on available musicians and/or what was appropriate for the occasion.
Sort of recycling his own material, not unusual at the time. It is something we also have seen done by other composers, like Händel, although the latter had more commercial reasons for doing so, e.g. when a certain melody had proven to be successful earlier, and/or he was under time pressure to produce a new opera or oratorium.
Another important issue is that studying the handwriting of musical scores does not say anything about the original writer. Bach worked in a full score version, showing all parts below each other. This was actually the final product of his thinking. Following that, all parts had to be written out and copied many times for respective instruments and voices. It is obvious that Bach had many helpers within his family and his pupils. Several techniques were shown to distinguish copiists and timestamping the originals and copies that survived the centuries.
All in all, a fascinating tour and evenso fascinating research. I'm not sure, however, the audio tour also provides so much inside information. The guided tour we had was part of the Bach Fest 2025, and maybe not part of the regular offering of the Bach Museum. You'll have to ask around.
(Bach Study in the Breakthroughs)。
