点评:I'd always wanted to visit this house, but regret to say I won't bother either the NT any more. The NT is meant to be the custodian of our national heritage but I found myself wandering into a Disney theme park for middle class children, dumbed down and came away with no idea if the history of the house, the people behind the beautiful interior. Now I visited at Christmas with a fairy tale theme which meant a lot of tat in every room obscuring the interior I came to see. If I wanted to see that I'd go to a grotto in a local shop. Proper Victorian decorations would have been more appropriate using greenery from the estate and more sustainable.
I visited NT properties when I was a child and developed a deep love of history without all the Disneyfied supposedly family friendly stuff. On the contrary, I would have felt this to be patronising and babyish when I was six. Children hate being talked down to
The toilets were unclean
with a dreadful trough for a washbasin that looked like it came out of some nightclub and was not in keeping with the building.
I feel the ant has utterly lost its way, and is properties are not for serious historians. The gift shop, where I'd hoped to find books on gothic revival architecture was similarly bland and full of children's stuff. Would be better preserved as a country house hotel
