点评:If you are visiting Kings Canyon National Park on Hwy 180 from Fresno, you will quickly be introduced to the park's Sequoias or at least the remnants once you enter the pay stations. On your immediate right is a parallel parking space and on the left a sequoia stump. If you drive about a mile inside the park there is a parking area with trailhead. However, if you are pressed for time or want to see something interesting when you enter, park at the parallel space and follow the trail on the left as it will take you to the Mark Twain stump.
It is rare for a named sequoia tree to be cut, but in 1891, this tree was cut for scientific purposes by the Museums of Natural History in New York and London. In both cases the museums wanted a full cross section of the tree to displayed to thousands so they could see trees this big and this old did exist. Today, over 130 years after they were cut, the stumps still remain. This grove is littered with dozens of large stumps and two living sequoias. However, the highlight is the Mark Twain stump that is the largest. There are stairs on the stump that allow you to climb on top and see just how large this tree was and how old as you can see hundreds of tree rings.
While the Sherman and Grant trees are amazing to see, the Twain stump is probably the best perspective to just how large these trees are. Look at pictures of our party of four spaced along the diameter with amble room and a selfie on the stump that shows four people cover only a small fraction of this tree. It is truly amazing and something I highly recommend you see on your visit.
