点评:Monday afternoon on the 28th August we walked along the East Pier from one end to the other. It is approximately 1.3 kilometres (roughly 0.8 of a mile) in each direction.
The original lighthouse opened on the 1st October 1847, at the end of the pier and has been a landmark ever since.
The Tower stood at forty-one feet, roughly twelve and a half metres, until 1892, when it was heightened by 12 feet, thus increasing the range of the lamp. It became fully automated on 31st October 1977.
The circular stone built tower stands on top of the round light keepers accommodation. At the top of the tower is the lantern and it's housing, painted bright red, which is surrounded by railings, also painted red, creating a small platform around the lantern.
The lighthouse is situated in the military battery and is surrounded by military buildings including the artillery store, fog bell, officers' quarters and guard room.
It is well worth the walk along the Pier to see the Lighthouse, there are a number of interesting landmarks along the way.
