点评:Tuesday 7th May we walked the East Pier, along it is where this wonderful old bandstand is located, on the lower edge of the Pier by the waterfront
The bandstand and sunshelter, on the higher level of the Pier were built in the 1890's and capture the spirit of the Victorian era.
On the pier wall by the Bandstand.there is a circular metal box with a handle, the instruction is to turn the handle to hear some music.
According to the information board, the piece of music played is Come back to Erin by John McCormack. Back in the day, every evening the band, in the bandstand, would play this piece of music at exactly 20.40 as the Mailboat set sail, leaving those on the Pier thinking of friends and family far away.
We did turn the handle and the music played, closing our eyes we were transported back to a time that the band were actually playing. A real piece of nostalgia.
Also on the wall is a stone plaque which celebrates the restoration of the bandstand and sunshelter, in 2010.
Although the wrought-iron supports of the sunshelter have been restored the roof covering has not been replaced. The supports remain a feature of the Pier alongside the bandstand.
