Interesting history- wonderful volunteers- great family day out- so worth a visit!
South Foreland Lighthouse的点评
点评：Fantastic views over the port of Dover and the famous white cliffs of Dover. What a site! Around forty mins of walking to the lighthouse with the tunnels breaking up the journey around half way. Stunning views of the busiest shipping lane in the world- on a good day France is clearly visible. As NT members we did both the tour of the tunnels and the lighthouse- absorbing and informative for all.
The National Trust volunteers were exceptional! At the tunnels we were kitted up and guided by Peter, assisted by Jim and friends we learned about the history of the tunnels. We found their passion for history infectious and engaging. Learn about 'sound mirrors', 'pure steel' and many other things besides.
The tour of the lighthouse was great too. Why lighthouses? See mapped out the thousand shipwrecks on the treacherous shifting Goodwin sands just offshore. Learn about the history of this once vegetable oil fired light. The tour guides were enthusiastic, very willing to answer questions and demonstrated the workings of an evolving lighthouse over the years- from clockwork to full automation! We loved it and would recommend a visit and the life saving power of lighthouses around the world.
