The Pipiwai Trail - Our Family's All-Time Favorite Trail!

点评：If you are visiting Maui, the Pipiwai Trail is an absolute must-do. Of all the hikes I have ever completed, this one is easily my favorite!
We left the Sheraton Maui by 6 am and drove straight through on the Road to Hana to get to the entrance a little bit after it opened. There were a few people already there but it wasn't too busy yet. Parking at that time was easy, too.
The scenery is nothing short of magical. You are completely surrounded by a lush, green rainforest as you explore. Along the way, you’ll get to admire a massive, breathtaking banyan tree, cross charming small wooden bridges over peaceful creeks, and gaze up at spectacular, tall waterfalls. A huge highlight is the incredibly peaceful bamboo forest - listening to the wind rustling through the stalks while walking along the great raised boardwalk section is an experience I'll never forget.
Some helpful tips to make the most of your adventure: The trail is not flat and is moderate in difficulty. It is a steady uphill climb on the way in, but not too bad. Out-and-back it is roughly 4 miles total. I highly recommend wearing proper hiking boots because it can get muddy and some areas can be slippery (especially walking on and off of the bridges). Bring plenty of water for everyone in your group.
There are no reservations required to hike, but there is an entrance fee to the park. You can use the America The Beautiful Pass here, if you have one. Otherwise, the Haleakalā National Park entrance fee is currently $30 per private vehicle and is valid for 3 days (and also gets you into the Summit District). Hours are usually 9 am to 5 pm.
We had children with us ages 6 to 9, and they did absolutely amazing! It is the perfect level of challenge to feel like a real adventure. Pipiwai is an unforgettable trail. Don't skip this Maui gem!
