点评：When our cruise ship docked in Beppu, Japan, famous for their hot springs, my husband and I were eager to try the local hot spring onsen. Unfortunately, Japan’s onsen etiquette requires complete nudity, as wearing swimming suit was considered unsanitary for public bathing. Even though the facility was separated by gender, we were not comfortable with this custom. (More myself than my husband!)
Fortunately, Hyotan Hot Springs, located a short taxi ride from the cruise port, offered private onsen rooms. The room came with changing room, a place to soak in the coin operated hot spring water, along with separate sauna and a cold-water tub. You have the option to choose the outdoor or indoor room. Fee was based on the duration of the time you reserved the room. We made a reservation for 90 minutes and it cost 3,600 JPY ($24), paid in cash at the end. While shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided, you need to bring your own towel and drinking water, as these are extra charges.
You can only book one week in advance. Highly recommended for those people who want to experience the Japanese onsen in private.
