点评:This Shinto shrine is said to be the geographical center of Japan, hence its importance. In addition, the souls of the entire country are worshiped here. If you are nearby, how can you not visit?
We were surprised at the compact size of the grounds as we easily walked around the entire compound in short order. We then did the walk again, this time to take photos. A funeral for a dignitary was in progress when we arrived and we were thankful that we were not turned away from the precinct, but we kept our distance from the ceremony.
The vermilion and white buildings are reminiscent of the Itsukushima Jinja on Miyajima and appeared to have been recently painted before our visit in April of 2023.
Traveler’s tip: easily accessible by train from Bessho Onsen; the shrine is also a stop on the Heritage Bus trip that loops around the area.
Toilets can be found in the parking area in front of the entrance.
