Michelangelo's architectural resting place for the Medici family

点评：The Medici chapel is connected to the church of the family - the San Lorenzo - but entered separately from the back in the Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobra.
It consists of a large open space with burial plaques in the ground centered around the burial monument of Cosimo the Elder whose sarcophagi supports the vault of the crypt. This monument can also be seen from the church of San Lorenzo side through the bars on the other side.
The main attraction though are the 2 larger chapels.
The New Sacristy - Sagrestia Nuova - contains the tombs of especially Lorenzo Magnifico, and is surrounded by statues of the times of the day - Night and Day, Dusk and Dawn. The sacristy and the tombs are designed and executed by Michelangelo and his strong masculine statues are easily recognizable from his male portraits in the Sistine Chapel frescos.
The other chapel - the Cappelle dei Principi or Chapel of the Princes - is far more imposing. A octogonal chapel under a 59 meter dome it contains six massive marble sarcophagi surrounded by marble work on the walls, the floor - everywhere and in every color possible.
The sarcophagi are empty, but the artwork is impressive.
Definitely worth the visit and no need to reserve your spot here - open every day from 8.15 to 18.50. You will need around 1 hour to visit it properly.
