Fabulous Place - well worth a visit
Lowther Castle and Gardens的点评
点评：This was rather an impulse visit whilst looking for something to do.
In truth - the Castle and gardens were one of the highlights of our short trip to the Lake District. Just to be clear - Lowther is less about the ‘castle’ as an intact building and more about a celebration of how it sits in the environment and the restoration and development of the gardens.
Admission was £15 per adult - and I did not, in any way, feel this was excessive. The staff in the admissions office/shop were lovely. Helpful and friendly and genuinely enthusiastic about the castle. There’s a short exhibition - explaining how the building ended up in a semi ruined state.
The castle itself is a ‘stable’ ruin, and it is mind boggling to imagine the scale when it was intact.
We loved the gardens - the sense of peace was lovely (we visited first thing on a bright and clear October morning) The highlight for us (46 and 56) was the adventure castle - it is truly fabulous with turrets, walkways, climbing walls, tubular slides and zip wires. There were no children there, so we had a climb, and a slide and a ride on the zip wire. It was fabulous - if you get chance, have a go. For the children visiting - this would be such a treat.
The Japanese garden, clearly a work in progress, is tranquil and feels special. The view across the fields from the plateau is stunning.
The cafe was pleasant. The food reasonably priced and prepared fresh. But if you didn’t want to buy food in the cafe, there are lots of spots to picnic.
We loved it here - it feels much more special than the Lost Gardens of Heligan and these 2 grown ups wished it was our garden.
