Touristy, yes — but still a highlight in Kota Kinabalu!

点评：This was a memorable visit and definitely a must-do in Kota Kinabalu. It does feel touristy — sometimes even a bit cheesy — but aren't staged plays supposed to be? Just imagine yourself in a traditional village, go along with the actors, and have fun with it!
The artifacts are fascinating, the snacks are tasty, and the people are genuinely warm and friendly. My kids especially loved the interactive food stations, the jumping and dancing activities, and the henna tattoos. The cultural dances were cute, and the buffet lunch was surprisingly decent — not gourmet, but not horrible either.
My advice: skip the tour package. Hire a private driver/guide and do it yourself. This trip only takes half a day, so you can save money by paying a driver for the full day and adding a city tour or another activity afterward.
We hired a driver/guide named Chang, and he was fantastic with our family — great with kids, incredibly helpful, and even stepped in as a fill-in dad when my back was acting up. He took us on several trips, and we were delighted with his service every time. I found Chang's name the same way I'm sharing it now — through another traveler's review. Happy to share more about him in the forums if you're interested!
