点评:Visited Highclere Castle last week with my husband. We had a guided tour of the ground floor of the castle where the guide talked about both the history of the castle and how they filmed Downton Abbey at the property. The guide Sally was very knowledgeable and she took time to answer anybody’s questions. As well as the information provided by the guide there were also outfits from Downton and information about them in each room. You could wander around the room and look at these whilst the guide was talking. Once upstairs it was a self tour of the bedrooms. The guide waited at the top of the stairs for us and took us back down to finish the ground floor tour.
The tour was accessible on the ground floor for those with reduced mobility. There was a couple of chairs in each room you could sit on if you needed to sit down. For those unable to use the stairs to visit the bedrooms I believe photographs are available instead. If anybody is in a wheelchair it maybe difficult to get around as the paths are gravel.
Following the tour you could visit the Egyptian collection in the basement. The 5th Earl was the person who discovered the tomb of Tutankrmum with Howard Carter in the 1920’s.
There were 60 people on the tour but the group is split into three groups of 20 and each tour starts in different areas. However after about 1.5hrs of touring the house you all end up in the Egyptian rooms. If you are interested in reading everything in this exhibition just wait in the first room as it soon empties. We found many people just walked through as they were not intrested in the exhibition.
After visiting the Egyptian exhibition we were provided with a lovely afternoon tea. 4 big finger sandwiches, small cup of homemade soup and a quiche. This was followed by 3 mini cakes and a scone plus either tea or coffee. Louis the Catering Manager came out into the garden where most people where eating as it was a sunny day. He mixed with everyone and had a chat with everyone. This was nice of him.
Following this we went to the small gift shop to pick up our free book which ihas been written by the current Lady about the 5th Lady Cameron’s life.
We then went for a walk down to the Monks and Secret garden. These were both beautiful and very well cared for. We sat in a seat in the sun for 30mins in the monks garden and only saw two thee people. Many people left straight after their afternoon tea.
We arrived at the main door at 10:15 and left at 15:00. It advises to be at the main door at 10:20, please ensure you are there at that time as the Estate Manager comes out to great you and give you a little background information.
Feedback :-
We paid £140 for my adult ticket and £85 for my carers ticket. We felt this was a little steep but ultimately you are paying towards the upkeep of the castle.
It would be beneficial to be given a map of the grounds on admission as I didn’t know where the disabled toilet was. These are seperate to the toilets behind the gift shop. The disabled toilets are behind the Coach House. There needs to be a sign on the door of the toilets behind the gift shop indicating where to find the disabled toilet, if a map is not to be given out. I did download a map from your website and my battery run out couldn’t access it.
The afternoon tea was nice and well presented. However, I think we should have received a little menu card with it as to what was on the plate. Especially as some people maybe allergic to the ingredients. I had to ask what two of the puddings were as I didn’t recognise them. I feel there should also be an availability to access a drink of water as not everybody drinks hot drinks. I discussed my feedback with Louis on the day who advised you can make the catering team aware of any dietary requirements when booking.
