点评:I took the State Rooms, Art Collection and Historical Basement tour this weekend and I can't praise it highly enough - this is an absolutely must-visit house and gardens. As other reviewers have said, it really is amazing.
It’s a privately-owned family home that has been continuously lived in for over 1,000 years and I was shown around by Coco, the in-house historian, no less. It was only the 2 of us, which made it even more special. She is incredibly knowledgeable, not only about the house, its history and the Eliot family, but also more widely around art, architecture, and the broader historical context. Her deep love for the house and family shone through. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
The tour began in the basement (below stairs), looking at the kitchens, servants quarters, and tunnels, which are filled with interesting things to look at. There are also some elements from the original monastic architecture, although much has been updated over the centuries. We then moved up to the grand staterooms with their beautiful furniture and important art from the likes of Reynolds and Lenkiewicz, who painted the mural in the round room and is a must see.
The house is still lived in by the Eliot family, who bought it during Elizabeth I’s reign, and you can feel that it is a beloved family home, complete with personal elements that you would expect from that. You may also bump into members of the family wandering around, as we did, and they were welcoming, charming and friendly.
Yes, of course it's a bit tattered around some of the edges, but that is part of the charm of a family home, and hats off to the Eliot family for keeping it going. Port Eliot is the perfect antidote to sterile heritage sites which have had all personality surgically removed. They also love visitors, so go!!!!
The grounds are also well worth exploring, as it is the priory chapel which includes windows by William Morris and Burne-Jones. So you can make a real day of it – there’s even a café and bar in the stables which does great cakes.
A final note about booking - it's via Eventbrite (linked to from their website), and you do need to book a couple of days in advance, as they do not have a host of volunteer guides on hand. However, it might be possible to try phoning up on the day to see if they can accommodate you – you never know.
I could say a lot more, but I think I've already written more than enough - just go and see it for yourself.
