White wine purchased and Orange wine tasted

点评：Our tour of the main wine-producing areas of the Loire Valley continued with Stage 4: Sancerre to Amboise (Day 5 in France). We were now based in Amboise on our second day here.
We had purchased wine here way back in 2017 during our month-long ‘grand tour’ of France. Back then we bought several cases here of what we had discovered was some very fine wine. Today our return visit was to buy only three bottles of their delicious ‘Château de Montdomaine’ Sauvignon Blanc. We had already bought three bottles in Sancerre and three more in Pouilly-sur-Loire. Our plan was to then buy wine in Saumur and Clisson to reach our allowance of 48 bottles of still wine.
We had already checked opening-times here during our walk the day before. Today we visited again to taste the wine and then buy. After our tasting we sat outside at their pavement tables and had a glass each of another wine, and it was difficult not to buy this as well. We had our plan however and this time we stuck to it … but it was certainly a challenge.
Whilst we were drinking our second wine we noticed a couple drinking orange wine from a bottle they had obviously purchased. We had seen orange wine before and had wondered what it was like. A third couple asked the two young women what the wine was like, and were kindly offered a small taste.
One of the cave staff passed, so we asked him about the wine. He explained that orange wine is made from white grapes that are left to ferment with the grape skins, similar to a red wine. This produces a wine which is orange coloured. The two women overheard our discussion and offered us a taster too.
To be brutally honest I disliked it, it didn’t have a bouquet: it had a smell. It had a rather agricultural taste. It was the colour of wee, by someone who was massively dehydrated.
