点评：The picturesque church of St Peter in Thaon is the cover feature on several architectural histories of Normandy. Hidden in a forest of rural Calvados, the setting is charming. The checkerboard pattern and corbel masks under the cornice are a pure delight.
Road signage is minimal. Ignore the markers for the “old church” in town and keep driving. Parking is available off the main road. The path through the tall trees takes about ten minutes to the clearing on a brook at the end of the trail. The setting makes a great picnic stopover. Closed except for a few summer Sundays, the interior is so bare, it’s no loss for the visit.
The base of the tower dates from 1080 and the rest from the early 12th century. Now decommissioned, the side aisles fell into ruin in the 18th century and were removed. Today there are openings in the nave wall to view the interior capitals. St Peter is unusual in that it was built with parish resources lacking support of any noble patron. It retains that sense of local pride.
