点评:Tuesday 10th of May and we wandered around the enchanting Balcon de Europa.
It was here that we found the diminutive bronze Statue of Alfonso XII, the King of Spain.
The statue depicts the King with his arm resting on the railings holdind a pair of gloves in his other hand. He looks relaxed with his legs crossed and his back to the sea.
Alfonso was born on 28th November 1857 and died as 25th November 1885, almost 28.
He was known as The Peacemaker and was King for 11 years from 1874 till his death in 1885.
The staute pays tribute to the King's visit to Nerja in 1855 to see the damage caused by the earthquake that hit the region on Christmas Day in 1884.
Alfonso, while standing on the viewing point, is attributed with saying that it was the balcony to Europe, which it became known as.
It is a rather popular statue for visitors to have their photograph taken, not every day you can rub shoulders with a King. It can be difficult to get a photo of just the statue.
There is a small plaque on the ground, near the statue, which records details of the visit.
