点评:It might look like just a simple, quaint bridge but this is actually a rare and heritage-listed bridge. Only two of these Allan timber truss bridges have survived (the other one is in Woodville).
When it was built between 1896 - 1898, people still mostly travelled by horse and cart, steamship or train. Motor cars were a new-fangled contraption and were only just being introduced in the 1890s.
The opening of the bridge was a big deal. A grand opening ceremony was held in 1898 - the Morpeth Brass band played, local school children formed a long procession and political speeches were given.
Locals told us that nowadays the bridge is often illuminated at night, with colourful lights. We were only in Morpeth for the day so we didn’t see that.
Unless you have a passion for bridge engineering, this is only a very quick stop, after which you can head across the road to the classic old-school Australian pub, the Commercial. From the Verandah Bar, you can look down over the bridge and river, with a drink in hand.
