点评:I was looking forward to visiting Jorvik on my visit to York. It was somewhere people told me I had to go to as I like history and learning about the cities I visit around the UK. The staff were all brilliant, especially those dressed up - they really kept in character and made the experience feel immersive. I enjoyed the seated ride around the Viking villages, exploring the sights, sounds and smells of Viking York from butchers to blacksmiths, fabric dyers to mystics.
Outside of the ride there was a little ‘time portal’ at the beginning as an introduction to Viking York, and a small museum at the end with various artefacts on display.
I left feeling a little disappointed but I can’t put my finger on exactly why. I think I thought it would be bigger? Like a more traditional museum where I can take as much time as I want to look and learn. Or perhaps because most of the visit felt like a tour where my ‘journey’ was dictated by the length of the ride so my overall visit was around an hour, which felt like no time at all.
I would still recommend a visit to Jorvik. It’s clear a lot of love, effort and time has gone into creating an experience that feels different to anywhere else in York, but I wouldn’t go in expecting to be there very long.
