点评:Built as a Tudor mansion in 1582, the house was extended in the mid-18th century to accommodate the extensive art collection of the new owner, Paul Methuen. He had been a successful diplomat and was Lord of the Admiralty and Privy Councillor. From 1715 he became an art collector. Although some items were later sold off and are now to be found in the National Gallery, The Courtauld Galleries or the Met in New York, the collection was augmented by that of the Rev John Sanford on his death in 1855. The main reason to visit Corsham Court today is to visit this fine collection of mainly Italian and Dutch art. The collection boasts works by Filippo Lippi, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Turner, among many others. Some are unusual, such as that of Elizabeth I in old age, and stunning, like Still life with a Carpet, by Fieravino. Famous architects and craftsmen were involved in the furnishings and fittings, such as Capability Brown, John Nash (much of whose work had to be undone), Chippendale, the Adam brothers. There are pietra dura cabinets, an unusual pair of chests covered in fish skin, and a Clementi piano. The oldest piece is a Triptych dating from 1375. The gardens also are well worth a visit, laid out by Capability Brown. Their 17 acres include a bath house.
