France Afloat的点评
点评：This was our second canal holiday, the first being on the Midi. The team at France Afloat cared for us superbly and our boat (Linseen 33, Sanguetta) was immaculate and very comfortable for two adults. Sanguetta was very easy to navigate, nimble and responsive with easy access to all areas above and below deck, a very classy craft compared to the Horizon 3 we had on the Canal Du Midi (which I’m not denigrating).
We started in Tannay with a very smooth and thorough handover by Tom who assured we were comfortable with the controls and equipment, taking us on a test drive before handing over the keys, so to speak, therefore if this is your first time in control, you’ll not be left alone until you’re comfortable.
Tannay is a small but pretty base and offers secure parking and above all, a superb supermarket 5 minutes up the hill, where I’d strongly suggest you stock up before departure as “good” supermarkets are few and far between if you head north to Vermonton (home port), of course there are plenty, but the Tannay one was the best and there’s plenty of storage space on the boat, albeit that the fridge is quite compact.
We had zero issues with the boat however, due to “user error” I had need for support with a hot water issue and upon calling the “technical assistance” number which was answered immediately, my error was pointed out and we were soon washing up again, thus be assured you’re in good hands should support be needed.
The Nivernais is quiet (May 2023) compared to the Midi (October 2022) however, we liked that as it meant passing through locks quickly, no queuing in narrow sections and free choice of berths wherever we stopped for lunch or the night on our 10 day trip.
The drawback of that is a lacking of readily accessible infrastructure along the route (Tannay to Auxerre) where unlike the Midi which is full of choice (restaurants, shops) etc, on the Nivernais one must prepare for more independent living between the larger ports (hence stock up well before departing), that said, once at a main town or city, the choices are as expected.
We met a few France Afloat boaters across out 20 day trip and all shared positive experiences with the company and their boats and at every port or pontoon where we moored for lunch or to stay overnight, we were only charged once for water and electricity (€21) whereas on the Midi we were charged at every opportunity 😂.
We felt 100% safe on the Nivernais at all times, we saw almost zero litter, graffiti or anti social behaviour, akin to the Midi but far removed from a boating experience we had in the U.K.
All the locks are maned and operated for you, thus no turning of lock keys or pushing open gates , you only need to secure your boat with the lines provided which by the end of day one on the water, one becomes an expert, in fact by the end of our trip I was helping the lock keepers operate the gates for some additional exercise (we rarely encountered a lock keeper who didn’t speak English) and noted many young students helping out who all enjoyed chatting with us.
We tipped the Eclusiers on the Midi and we’re prepared to do so here however, it did seem the norm and so we only did so when we felt it appropriate however, most lock keepers have dogs so we took a big bag of treats which went down well with all.
In conclusion, our experience with France Afloat was superb, we’ll use them again.
We found the pricing structure very competitive, there were no hidden extras, the boat was lovely, the Nivernais so beautiful and the team friendly, professional and supportive.
