点评:I went to the Arthur Armstrong centenary show. He’s a Carrick painter, dabbled in Cubism. The exhibition must have taken years to prepare, finding the private owners of scattered pictures and persuading them to lend them to the museum for this celebration.
Why not just do a book? Getting the actual canvasses up on the wall is a million times better. You can walk right up to the pictures and see how Armstrong built up ridges of plaster, so some painted items are literally outstanding. He gouges troughs to outline things. Sections are vigorously textured where he’s stabbed patterns into thick, drying paint with sharp objects. These paintings are sculptural; no book or photo can capture that.
They had a free guidebook for the show you could take away - bonus points! Armstrong's photos and sketch books were in glass cabinets, showing things that had inspired him. It was great to see the paintings of a son of Carrick return.
The place has toilets, a restaurant, and a museum full of interesting items. The shows change regularly, so I like to visit often.
