点评:Couple with two toddlers aged 2 & 3
Pros:
-really friendly and professional staff.. welcoming on the door, scanning tickets, cafe, planetarium (Ruben?) and kids story (Ian).
Exhibits we loved:
-the bubbles (but equally we could create at home)
-hamster wheel
-scaffolded ball run
-slanted room
-boat bubble sinking
-viscosity bubble speeds
-parachute tennis balls ❤️
-globe air hover
-milking cow
-open piano so you could see the hammers hit the strings
-admittedly informative that I didn’t realise how important sand is or how long it takes to form.
-Planetarium younger show (not 3D) was great to have something separate offered and the guide and adventure style was great and well received by toddlers. Pitched perfectly to look for colours, actions and pretend buttons.
-Cafe choices were good and healthy options like humus & carrot and herbal teas.. (wish there was camomile for if feeling overwhelmed)
-Shop had really interesting kids books at a glance.
-Allowed to bring your own picnic, great.
-really appreciated the portable steps around the place so toddlers could see.
Cons:
-Planetarium voice volume could be much lower then toddlers wouldn’t have needed ear defenders (worth taking espec if sensory sensitive. Would be nice if they provided some for the money? Wish we would have seen what the sun is like.. the children knew it was a burning ball of fire but instead just looked at it as a dot. Wish we’d have seen all the planets or flown through space more and seen more wonders. The turning around bit of landing our rocket was weird each time.. youngest was like ‘where’s the planet gone?!’ Unnecessary time fill. Disco was fun.. twice, but I’d have liked to have seen more of space for the money, we can dance at home (and do).
(Just fyi to We the Curios the accessible row doesn’t have arm rests to pretend there are buttons on).
Story time: would be good to know it’s puppets in advance as one of my toddlers is petrified of them and did go very rigid. Worm throwing too old for my kids but I expect older ones love it. Had to reassure them lots that they were pretend!
Exhibits:
Where’s a lot of the science gone?! I last went to the old one as a child (next to temple meads) and I remember:
-electricity dome that you put your hands on
-magnets and about polarity (the one magnet thing we found my children couldn’t reach their hands under and look over to engage with)
-floating buoys and water wheels
-waves
-windmills
-cogs
-the thing you often see to put coins in and they spin round faster and faster.. I remember loving that as a kid.
-sounds waves (just one thing on vocal chords that was too loud for my boys)
-Like a speaker making something move on top.
-Wish there was stuff on hot, cold, liquid, gas, electricity, touch, smell
-genetics
-gravity
-engineering structures.. I did see a small bridge but I remember learning about the ‘key stone’ with a large soft play bridge I put together.
-Velcro.. it’s where I learnt about it being a hook and about seeds employing it too. Does the biology stuff not fall into We the Curios at all? -Chemistry.. videos of chemical reactions where you could choose which substances to mix.
-volcanos
-colour mixing with light to create purple etc.
-how 3D works
-water cycle?!
There was a lot on sand which felt too much.. repeated upstairs. People didn’t notice the sand timers as attached to end wall. One more prominent one or a sand waterfall / shoot / marble run would be better.
A massive empty space in the middle of the ground floor with benches and bean bags.. did we miss something?
A large area on animation (felt like there should be a separate area for a Wallace Gromit homage). Science? And didn’t suit younger kids but I could see teens and adults would enjoy.
Broken exhibits: the spinning wheels (elastic broke and my toddler actually caught his finger badly despite us supervising), the one asking if you thought you had a soul broke, the egg dome didn’t seem to do anything and wasn’t clear. The greenhouse was nothing?
The bumblebee bit didn’t make sense.. with the tap screen my toddler was encouraged to video him dancing like a bee but he had no concept of why or what he was doing. Why isn’t it all more joined up like a flower with pollen where it goes down a shoot or in a bees basket.. back to the hive.. it just didn’t explain anything but was a great photo opportunity for our toddlers dressed as bees.. but again we could do anytime at home.
-lots of people didn’t realise the ‘drum’ was part of the weather sequin board.. not obvious at all and once we did realise the kids liked it.. even a painted circle round the floor would link these together.
-don’t know why there was so much stuff on ‘the soul’ just asking people opinions or an artistic impression (interactive) of a soul.. science? Really? Felt more like it should be in an art space.
-biggest negative of exhibits was the GIANT images of ill body parts. Far too graphic for my children and should face the other way or come with a warning.
I was shocked at the crowds and lots of school trips when we try to go off season and quiet times because of overwhelm.. I can’t imagine what the holidays are like and would never visit during them.
We were so excited for this day out and I thought there would be loads of hands on stuff. My boys are intelligent and inquisitive and would have seized opportunities to get hands on and work out how things work and make them move but there weren’t many. It felt like a lot of things weren’t labelled and we weren’t sure what they were meant to be (the egg dome?)
Bring back some of the 1990’s exploratory stuff! Felt a bit cool in places and good photo opportunities but missed out core science things I’d love my boys to have been exposed to.
Not sure if there were water refill stations? Didn’t see one? Would be helpful.
Being easily anxious and with toddlers in tow I’d have found a map of the layout and exhibits super useful.
-Velcro..
