Fascinating Cultural and Historical Tour of Ghana by Nyonkopa Eco Tours

点评：I highly, highly recommend Nyonkopa Eco Tours and Kweku/Christian Ansong, Nyonkopa’s owner, for any trip to Ghana! My family and I recently went on a weeklong tour of Accra and Kumasi, and we can’t praise Kweku and his company enough for the mind-opening, fascinating, and thoroughly enjoyable historical and cultural tour of Ghana they gave us.
We learned so much about Ghana’s history and culture, and Kweku’s preparation and guiding made the entire trip an exciting, enlightening, worry-free vacation. He arranged memorable tours and unique interactions that gave us wonderful experiences of Ghanaian culture, while making sure we always had the luxuries of upscale hotels, fine dining, and a full-time guide and driver in an air-conditioned SUV.
I was impressed with Kweku from the start. I first contacted him because I saw he offered a trip to the Ashanti Akwasidae festival and that he customized tours. Of the three companies I contacted, he was the first to respond, the most personable, most flexible, and the most reasonable in cost. Over the course of a few weeks, we worked out an itinerary over email, and he was reassuringly prompt, flexible, and positive about all my requests. He also answered my many questions about visas and provided the necessary documents immediately after we booked the trip. He continued to respond to my schedule changes and questions until the moment we arrived.
The eight days we spent in Ghana were a whirlwind of cultural and historical riches. From Accra to Kumasi and back to Accra, we experienced fascinating museums and sites about Ghana and the Ashanti kingdom, including:
• the National Museum of Ghana (about Ghana’s cultures past and present)
• the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre for Pan-African culture (featuring DuBois and Pan-Africanism),
• the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum (in honor of Ghana’s first president)
• Black Star Square (celebrating Ghana’s independence from Britain in 1957)
• the Prempeh II Jubilee museum (showcasing Ashanti heritage and artifacts),
• Manhiya Palace Museum (featuring Ashanti history and treasures, including gold ornaments recently loaned back from the British Museum),
• the Okomfo Anokye Sword site (where Okomfo Anokye buried a sword over 300 years ago and where the Golden Stool descended into the lap of Osei Tutu I, the first Ashanti king
• Ejisu Besease shrine (one of the only surviving examples of traditional Ashanti architecture and the shrine which the Queen mother Yaa Asantewaa consulted when she led the Ashanti in their last war against the British
We also engaged in personalized demonstrations and workshops on fantasy-coffin carving, kente-cloth weaving, adinkra-cloth stamping, dancing, cocoa farming and bead making as well as made exciting visits to the vast Kejetia and Makolo markets. And while every stop was memorable and striking, the highlight of our trip was the Akwasidae festival at Manhiya Palace in Kumasi, where the Ashanti people give thanks to their ancestors and pay homage to the Ashanti king and queen mother every six weeks. Our experience was particularly impressive since it was the Silver Jubilee of the current king, Osei Tutu II, but Kweku assured me that the festival is always a vibrant event.
Kweku’s skills in guiding us through the Akwasidae festival were superb. He masterfully led us through the crowds, finding excellent places to view the processions and celebrations that we could never have located on our own. He somehow got us involved in a spontaneous dancing event, and he even managed to obtain permission for us to speak with two chiefs.
Just as at the festival, at every stop in our journey, we benefited from Kweku’s historical and cultural knowledge, his preparation, his organization, his on-the-spot ability to take advantage of whatever the site offered, and his connections with local people. He knew the important things to see, and he was always ready to make changes if we said something or if an opportunity presented itself. Because we were with him, we were treated as his friends and as respectable guests. Moreover, Kweku is a skilled photographer and videographer, and he was always ready to take charge of our cameras so we could enjoy our interactions and be in our photos.
At the museums and cultural sites, Kweku first provided an introduction, and then set us up with his hand-picked guides who gave us personal, detailed tours. All our guides were experts in their fields, and like Kweku, they were engaging, knowledgeable, and made the museums come alive. Some of the most memorable things were not the sites themselves, but the people, towns, and activity along the roads. For this reason, having Kweku as a nonstop tour guide was invaluable. He answered any questions we raised about anything we saw, and he also took advantage of the time in the car to give us history, geography, culture, and language lessons.
Kweku has a vision for tourism in Ghana. He has a passion for what Ghana has to offer, and this passion is combined with his connections with the Ghanaian people as well as with an understanding of Americans. He is able to show Ghana’s culture to Americans in a way that highlights what makes Ghana so vibrant, interesting, and important in the world, both in the past and in the present. He also understood the stereotypes that we had about Africa, and he was able to help us feel comfortable and enjoy ourselves.
Kweku is also a naturally friendly, engaging person who was unfailingly polite, energetic, and helpful, and these attributes were also major reasons why he was so outstanding as a guide. He treated us as his friends from the start to the finish, and as with any friend, he made us feel like he enjoyed being with us and kindly overlooked our shortcomings.
And I must point out how valuable it was to have a full-time driver as well as a guide, and I compliment Nyonkopa on having such a talented and personable driver like our driver Kwabena. It was important to have a full-time driver so that Kweku could attend to our many questions on the road. Also, Kwabena was an amazingly skilled driver who negotiated the challenges of both city and rural driving with ease both during the day and night. He kept us safe, rose to any challenges of our special tour requests, and like Kweku, he was always polite, energetic, friendly, and helpful.
By the time our week was over, we truly felt that we had made real friends in Ghana, and that was perhaps the most meaningful outcome of our vacation.
Once again, I highly recommend a trip to Ghana for all Americans. It was exhilarating to experience a culture that is so dynamic and so different from the U.S., that is thriving and still connected to its past, where the people are so proud of their culture and graciously share it with outsiders.
