点评:The signature Swiss fountain for the perhaps the world's signature kinetic sculptor is found not far from center of Basel. Jean Tinguely spent a career mostly at the forefront of kinetic art (art that moves). While living in various parts of Switzerland during his life, the largest concentration of his surviving work is in Basel, notably the Tinguely Museum. However, if you don't have time to see the museum across the river is the newer section of Klein Basel, you can visit this fountain near the Barfusserplatz.
While fountains by nature seem to be kinetic art in the movement of water, this fountain has multiple founts that move in multiple ways to spray water over a large pool, each piece really its own fountain. At first it may look like unruly Kaos, but if you understand the location of the fountain, order and symbolism meet to provide one of the best displays of public art in a city defined by it. Today, the fountain sits in front of the modern Basel theater, but in the past, the fountain sits exactly in the dimensions of the former Basel theater stage which has allowed Tinguely to stage a perpetual live performance through his fountain.
For me, in a city with 100 fountains, this is the best and most entertaining and even more significant when you understand the symbolism and the importance of its creator to Swiss art. It is art, history and entertainment all placed together in something you should and can easily see in Basel visit. Definitely find the time to stop by.
