点评:Friday 27th June we visited Portland Bill which is located on the tip of the Isle of Portland in Dorset.
The iconic red and white striped Lighthouse is the most noticeable feature in the area, however this obelisk does also make a stand out feature.
On the front of the Obelisk, north face, are the letters TH with the year 1844 underneath. The TH stands for Trinity House, they administer all lighthouses and are the official authority for lighthouses in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.
The Obelisk which stands at seven metres (22 feet 11 inches high). It was built, in 1844, using Portland stone and was used as a warning to shipping off the coast. It warned of the presence of the low shelf of rock extending 30 metres south into the sea.
Despite the ravages of time and coastal climate conditions the Obelisk still stands on top of the cliff top after all this time. We were able to walk up to the Obelisk which did show some signs of wear and tear.
The monument was saved from threatened demolition in 2002 after Trinity House deemed it too expensive to maintain.
