Nice, Quiet Stone Ring and Cove
Stanton Drew Stone Circles & Cove的点评
点评:In the village of Stanton Drew, not far from Cheddar or Bristol, is a well-preserved stone circle and nearby cove of three stones. It is supposedly the third-largest stone-circle complex in England and includes a larger circle plus two smaller ones. Much of the circle layout is intact and fairly easy to discern. The cove has three stones next to each other and is thought to have been for rituals.
One legend has it that the cove stones are a wedding party who were turned to stone because the guests danced on a Sunday, supposedly because the party was dancing on Saturday and the Devil appeared to keep playing music after midnight and into Sunday.
The site appears to be quiet with few tourists. There were a couple other people visiting the circle when we were there and nobody else at the cove.
There is a small parking lot next to the field containing the circle, which is used for livestock. Visiting it is free but one is supposed to pay a pound for parking. The cove is next to the Druids Arms pub a short distance away, and there is a small car park there. It is also free. In the village, there is a sign indicating which way to go for each one.
