点评:In a very central location by Marktplatz and Marktgasse is this larger-than-life statue of the man, who brought the reformation to St.Gallen. This is quite special, since the town with its famous abbey was also the seat of a powerful Catholic prince-abbot.
Vadian is the Latin name that Joachim von Watt (1484-1551) gave himself in the humanist tradition, when studying in Vienna. A scholar, who had studied everything possible, except theology, he then returned to his home town, working as a city physician and then - for 25 years - also as its mayor. It was during that period that his interest in the ideas of the reformation began, probably also due to his friendship with the reformer in Zurich, Huldrych Zwingli.
In 1904, thus at a time, when monuments to famous men had become fashionable, this 2.8 ton and 3.75m high bronze statue on a pedestal was erected. Everybody was present at its inauguration, but no official of the Catholic church. The sculpture is the work of Richard Kissling, known for his classicist heroic style. By coincidence I have already written two reviews in Tripadvisor of creations by him. First the sculpture to José Rizal, national hero of the Philippines, in Manila, then about the William Tell monument in Altdorf. And almost daily I pass by his statue of Alfred Escher in front of Zurich's railway station.
