点评:The D-Day 75 Garden was one of the most moving memorials along the Normandy coastline.
It is located on the headland above Arromanches and was created to honour the 75th anniversary of the landings.
A sculpture of 97 year-old veteran, Bill Pendell MD, sits, lost in thought, as he looks back at a scene of himself as a 22 year-old landing on Gold Beach with his mates, on the 6 June 1944.
He is quietly reflective and the scene could not be more heart-rending.
Behind him, the young British soldiers are frozen in time as they make their way through the breaking waves and across the sand. A series of metal posts fixed at an angle represent the obstacles and mines that the Germans placed along the beach to making the landing even more difficult and dangerous.
One soldier pauses to hold out a hand to his mate who struggles to get up. Another holds his gun above his head to keep it dry while he forges through the waves.
The young soldiers are not solid. They are made from steel washers which gives them a hazy, nebulous quality. Interestingly, the artist, John Everiss, says that he wanted to create ‘a cloudy impression, like a memory that's fading’.
It is only a short 10-12 minute walk from the beach although it is steep. Halfway up there is a look-out point and a well-preserved Sherman tank. There are several other landmarks and memorials on the headland alongside the D-Day 75 Garden, including the 360-Degree Cinema (formerly a German radar station), an elevated Observation Deck, and the remains of several German bunkers. From here you also have a panoramic view of Arromanches harbour and the beaches below. It is well-worth the climb but if you don’t fancy it, then you can drive up.
