点评:There's always trepidation when initially visiting a new place with a wheelchair user - What is the access like..? Can we get in to the cafe...? Is it easy to push around...? Mostly there is always an element of difficulty, particularly when visiting historic sites and outdoor venues and, in all honesty, Belsay is no different in that respect. If you're self propelled you'll need strength and stamina to go from the Hall through the gardens to the Castle area, as will anyone who is pushing a wheelchair - there are a few steep gradients on the walk and a separate access point to enter into the main hall. It is possible to get in to the old Castle hall via a pathway that leads around the back, generally a bit of everything is accessible but you'll need to put a bit of work in.
Overall though, with this expectation in mind, what makes Belsay stand out is it's helpful staff and English Heritage's respect for carers, giving them free access when facilitating such a visit. It helps ENORMOUSLY and just having that acknowledgment means the world.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit - food was lovely from the first cafe, adjacent to the main Hall (accessed via a ramp and very spacious inside).
Mam said she would 'go again tomorrow' - a ringing endorsement.
Well done EH on maintaining such a beautiful place.
