The best museum in central Cambridge
University Museum of Zoology的点评
点评：Within the new David Attenborough building you can find the entrance to the Museum of Zoology under the entrance of a great blue whale skeleton. I find this museum a little unique, as it originally came about from the preserved specimens the university already had for usage by biology, vet med and life sciences students to examine anatomies of different creatures. Nowadays, it is more of a proper museum, but with some nice unique histories on why the specific animals are there, or old issues with early day taxidermy (such as not knowing which way the platypus feet went and putting them the wrong way round, as the taxidermist had never seen one alive in the wild.)
There is also a gull diorama which ties quite interestingly back into colonial exploration and study of how animals (and sometimes humans) were presented, though the gull diorama I believe was simply part of a research project and unlike the historical taxidermies or dioramas, was done after observation of the creatures themselves, then all input onto the same diorama. There are some other interesting facets talking about how species were categorised, Darwinian creatures, and earlier mistakes in taxidermy and anatomy arrangement.
All in all it's a bit weird and maybe not for the faint of heart. But if you like animals or zoology, I think it's well worth a visit.
