点评:On a sunny day, Bancroft Gardens is a delightful place to wander and stroll. The open, grassy park runs alongside the River Avon and sits next to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Having spent an afternoon visiting all of the historic Shakespeare-related sites and monuments in town, we were suffering a little from Shakespeare overload and were ready for something a little more relaxed.
There’s still quite a lot to see here. There’s a fountain, as well as several statues and monuments, including more Shakespeares. A modern, life-sized sculpture of ‘Young Will’ with one foot up on a park bench and an outstretched arm, all but invites you to pose with him. The more traditional Gower Memorial has an ageing, balding Shakespeare surrounded by four of his most well-known characters.
The waterway is lively, with a cafe, barges selling ice-creams and swans - lots and lots of beautiful, big white swans.
An operating lock is another interesting feature and we stopped to watch the sluice gates opening and closing, the water rising and falling, and the canal boats passing up and down the river.
The park is not huge so if like us, you’re happy to extend your walk, there’s a lovely riverside trail which starts from Bancroft Gardens.
