点评:The Clopton Bridge is an historic, medieval bridge, crossing the River Avon in Stratford-upon-Avon. Built in the 15th century by Sir Hugh of Clopton, it replaced an even earlier timber bridge. The stonework is clearly very old, with large, roughly hewn and weathered blocks. The long span has 14 pointed arches. Some time after it was built, it was described as “a sumptuous new bridge and large of stone”. Sumptuous isn’t normally a word I’d associate with a bridge (unless perhaps it was gold-plated or studded with diamonds) but we get the idea and clearly it was an impressive bridge in its day.
A toll house was added in 1814 to collect money for ongoing maintenance. You can still see this today - its the small turret-like building at one end of the bridge.
A cast iron footway was also added in 1827.
Walking along the riverbanks here is very scenic and crossing any of Stratford-upon-Avon’s bridges gives another nice vantage point across the water.
It’s worth noting that the nearby Tramway Bridge is a more pleasant one to walk across because it’s pedestrian-only whereas Clopton Bridge carries a lot of traffic. Also you get a good view of the Clopton Bridge and its arches from the Tramway Bridge.
