点评:Hall’s Croft, home to Shakespeare’s daughter, Susanna and her husband, John Hall, looks much like it would have in Shakespeare’s day.
Unfortunately, it’s still closed to the public and is undergoing a major restoration. From what we could tell, it’s been closed for a few years. There’s no sign of when it might be open again although the official site says Spring 2026.
While it’s still closed, it’s only a very minor sight. You can still see quite a bit from out the front but it’s all looking quite neglected and trees and greenery are beginning to take over. A plaque set into the footpath provides some historical information.
Susanna and John married in 1607 and after living for some years with Shakespeare in New Place, they moved to Halls Croft in 1613. The black and yellow Hall family crest, featuring three Talbot hunting dogs, hangs above the front door.
The house was newly built when they moved in (although the original building was much smaller than what you see here today).
John Hall was a doctor so he would have made great use of the garden out the back to grow plants and herbs for his medicines. A little bit of rose, lavender, or sage might cure a headache and mint might settle a queasy stomach. Sounds a lot better than some of the other popular remedies at that time, like dried toad which was thought to cure poisonous bites, rheumatism, smallpox and the plague.
NOTE: If you follow the Historic Shakespeare Walking Trail from the Stratford-upon-Avon tourist site, then Hall’s Croft is #21 on the map.
