点评:The Holy Trinity Church on the banks of the River Avon is famously the church where you find William Shakespeare’s grave.
It’s also the church where he was baptised in 1564, where he buried his 11 year old son, Hamlet in 1596, and where he gave away his daughter Susanna in marriage (twice). Finally he was buried himself in 1616.
Curiously, he was not married here but at Temple Grafton (possibly to avoid the scandal of Anne being already pregnant).
Here’s the thing though - if you visit in summer on a weekend, the chances are you won’t get to see much of the church. That’s because there’s almost certainly going to be a wedding. We got caught out and were unable to go inside (it happened to us at a couple of lovely Cotswold churches as well).
As Shakespeare’s tomb is inside the church, we missed out on this (it’s worth noting that whilst church entry is free, there is a £5 charge to see the tomb).
We could still walk around the church graveyard and although I was sorry to not be able to see inside, it was kind of fun to hear the church wedding bells ring out across the river and to glimpse the wedding party as they assembled near the main entrance.
