点评:This has to be the most famous literary home in the world.
Shakespeare’s birthplace is a surprisingly substantial house, located right in the centre of town. His parents were fairly well-to-do and had a certain status so the house was well-positioned and was the largest on the street.
We stood outside for a while, marvelling at the fact that more than 450 years ago the little Will Shakespeare grew up here with his parents and seven siblings. He would have learnt to walk, talk and scribble his first words here (if only his mother had thought to keep them).
Shakespeare stayed on in the house for a few years more after he married Anne Hathaway. Sadly one of his children, Hamnet, died here too (Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, ‘Hamnet’ tells this story wonderfully).
We’d been through the house a few years ago and it was excellent. Recreated to look as it would have when Shakespeare lived here, it gave us an excellent insight into both his life and life in general in the 16th century.
We didn’t go inside again this time but even without going in, you can still see a lot from the outside. The house fronts right onto the street so you can see it close-up. We could also go inside the attached gift shop where you’ll find just about any Shakespeare-related gift you can think of. It’s surprisingly untacky and is refreshingly free of cheap, plastic tat.
TIP:
If you are buying a ticket, it is worth paying the £6 more to get the combo "Shakespeare's Story" ticket that also includes New Place and Anne Hathaway’s cottage. Older websites tell you that there are 5 sites included but at the moment, it's only 3. Neither Hall’s Croft & Mary Arden’s Cottage are currently open to the public.
