点评:The entrance fee to Shakespeare’s house is not cheap. Neither is the modern entrance area very attractive and there are no concessions. However, this is a place we just had to visit. The house itself is surprisingly bare, and the rooms are small. There are guides in each room providing a little history. Despite these initial impressions it is quite an amazing experience to walk through the rooms where Shakespeare and his family lived. The story of the beds is interesting; the guest bed, an expensive luxury, would apparently have cost £1000 in modern money and was reserved for visitors.
On the day we visited, there were actors performing in the garden, which was a bonus. Don’t miss the toilets if you need them before leaving, for once you reach the gift shop it’s not possible to go back.
Remarkably the house survived, despite having been a pub for some time, thanks to Charles Dickens and others who put up the money to buy and conserve it. The ticket is valid for a year should you want to go on a second visit. Keep it in case, and if you wish to use it to visit Shakespeare’s New Place.
