点评:My wife and I, both senior citizens, visited the rice terraces with our twenty-strong tour group of varying ages as part of our China itinerary, so I don't know how much such an excursion would cost if booked independently.
Prior to driving up to the terraces we attended the Long Hair Show in Huangluo Yao Village and that was amazing - what a show. I was even chosen to go on stage to 'marry' one of the long-haired women, so now I have two wives - one in England and one in China!
Afterwards we wound our way up the road, higher and higher, until we were in a far more elevated position than we have ever been in a coach before. Even as we got off the transport at the drop-off point, the scenery was truly stunning. You felt like you were on top of the world.
We visited on 11th June 2026. We were given a choice by our guide and we all chose to walk around the fields and down into Ping'an Village. We walked around the Dragon's Backbone - you can see why it is called that, the terraces really do coil around the mountain like scales.
At the start point there are toilets and shops to get water etc., and the view from the Seven Stars with the Moon viewpoint is truly spectacular, overlooking the village which would be our final destination. Seven small piles of rock surround a moon-shaped paddy.
My wife was a little concerned that she would find the trek too taxing, but the guide explained that you maintain height as you walk around the terraces and only start to drop down into the village at the very end, and that there would be places to stop and rest. This turned out to be completely accurate.
So off we set on this tremendous trek. From my photos the terraces themselves look quite brown, although the surrounding area looked lush and green. We were surprised that there was no-one working on the terraces and it didn't look like there was much rice growing. Our guide later explained that in early June the fields have just been flooded and ploughed and the young seedlings have only just been transplanted, so they appear brown and muddy from a distance rather than green. They turn lush green in late June and July and golden at harvest time in autumn, so they had not been harvested - they had just been planted. We saw very few locals on the terraces themselves, only other tourists and the people running the little stalls selling cold drinks and trinkets along the path.
There were countless butterflies landing on the path and railings. About halfway round we came to a pagoda with toilets and drinks, where we rested for around fifteen minutes. During this time we heard a loud buzzing sound and saw a massive work drone coming up the mountain with an underslung load, which was truly a sight to see.
We then continued down steps and narrow paths into Ping'an Village. This part was quite confusing as the village is full of tiny streets and even the guide seemed to get a little lost, but we eventually found our way back to the coach. It took us around an hour and a half and was not too strenuous. We were all glad we had chosen to do it.
On our way back we had only just set off when the coach was stopped for a good long while. We couldn't work out why until almost half an hour later we started off again and saw the reason - a landslide had partially blocked the road. It showed us what a mountainous and potentially dangerous region this can be, especially after rain.
Good walking shoes are essential, plus a hat, water and a walking stick if you use one. There are plenty of places to buy cold water on the way.
