点评:We booked the Santa Sleepover for Thursday evening in to Friday. The package was good value, including entry to the Land of Lights, an overnight stay in a Western Lodge, breakfast and a show in the morning, theme park entry and the Santa visit. We had to swap the date due to my husband's work and this was simple enough to do over the phone, although we weren't sent an updated booking confirmation (I could see the change had been made via the "Manage My Booking" link).
We arrived at 4pm, checked in and took our luggage to our lodge, then headed out to the Land of Lights, which took you through various areas of the park lit with dozens of impressive displays. The paths are pushchair/wheelchair friendly and not muddy, which is a bonus (we have been to a similar event at a large park and it was very muddy!) I'm not sure if it's because we booked a package, but on the route we noticed marshmallow toasting stations and a selection of rides operating, and were told these needed to be pre-booked? I didn't receive any information about this prior to our visit, it isn't in the FAQs online and it wasn't mentioned on the gates (and it wasn't at all busy so there was plenty of opportunity to up-sell when we arrived!). By the time we realised, we were half way around and weren't going to walk all the way back to the beginning, so the kids were a bit disappointed, although thankfully not for long. The food court area had a good selection of food and drink options, prices weren't too bad (we had Burgers, German sausage and a Yorkshire pudding wrap, loaded fries, crumble and custard, muffins and hot drinks). Although everything appeared to be steaming in the trays, it wasn't very hot. Hard to tell if it just cooled very quickly once served as it was very cold out, or if it wasn't being kept at the correct temperature, though it did mean we could eat quickly and get going as it was a bit chilly standing still! We had a mulled wine back in the hotel bar and then missed the evening entertainment in favour of a family movie night in the Lodge.
The Lodge appeared quite modern, we had 3 bedrooms (1 double & 2 twin) and a large, comfortable seating area, plenty of clean towels and bedding and smart TV in the lounge plus small TVs in the bedrooms (though there were no remotes for these). It was warm enough inside despite it dropping to around 5° overnight, though we needed the fire on in the lounge as the radiator wasn't sufficient for that large area. Kitchen equipment basic but fine for a simple meal. Overall the accommodation didn't meet out expectations, and I've put a separate review on the hotel page regarding this.
In the morning, we were allocated "breakfast and a show" a 10.45am (anyone elses kids happy to wait til 10.45am for breakfast? Mine were up at half 6!). Instead, we took breakfast to eat in our lodge (none of us fancied sausage butties anyway) and skipped the show in favour of extra time on the rides, which were all up and running when we arrived at 10.15am (aside from Antelope which opened at about 11am). This was the best part of our experience thanks to the weather. As it was dry and bright, and the park was so quiet (perhaps everyone was at the show?), we didn't queue long for any of the rides, and lots we walked straight on to (although we did get wet bottoms on a couple being the first on). Antelope went round 3x as no one else came to queue in the interim! Some of the areas, including the part allocated for the Land of Lights, was closed off, so we had been on most of the available rides before we went to see Santa, which was fortunate as rain was forecast for the afternoon.
The Santa Steam Train experience was OK, we arrived a bit early for our 11.30am slot and were allowed through with no issues. The train ride was cute but there were storage and maintenance areas left open on the route and lots of the permanent figures had faded and peeling paint. Kids didn't notice but it made it feel a bit tatty. There's a bit of a walk through some illuminated and singing figures, then the "magic elevator" (which my two quickly realised wasn't actually moving 😅) then a short queue to see the big man himself. I think there were a few Santas as the queue moved quickly. Ours was quite clearly not old and though he tried, the exchange was a bit awkward. He did take a nice photos of us (took 3 so we had options), and we went through to the workshop so the kids could choose a toy. I think at 10 and 8, my two are a bit old for the toys available, although they'd had a ball on the rides so I don't think they were too bothered.
Do beware though that if you take any photos whilst you're in with Santa, he won't take one for you. Someone came over to enquire as to why they didn't have the opportunity for a photo whilst we were paying for ours, only to be told (not particularly politely) that if they'd taken their own, he wouldn't have offered. Although it didn't affect us directly, it felt a bit underhand, having this policy but not making people aware before hand. We encountered plenty of Elves on the route who could've let people know to avoid this scenario. Those guests were quite disgruntled when they left.
We came out in the Lost World, so we did another couple of rides, dropped the presents off at the car and went in to Lagados for lunch. This is marketed as a separate/independent restaurant but it's in a Gulliver's theme diner so it's not as posh as it sounds! Take away type food in cardboard trays, although everything we had was nice and it wasn't overly expensive. At this point, it had started to rain and was forecast for the rest of the afternoon, so we had a walk back to Lost World and did a couple of the under cover rides, and the kids had a go at roller skating on the way out. We left around 2pm
Overall, we had a lovely time and felt the value for money was good. In the December rush, we don't always get as much time together as a family so this fit the bill and provided lovely family memories. I felt that information and organisation could've been better. We like to plan trips like this to make sure we get the most out of them, but find generally with Gulliver's that information can be really vague and sometimes incorrect. This isn't ideal when you have ND children and need to make accommodations for them. I probably echo a lot of other reviews regarding the park being a bit tired, although work was ongoing to provide some new rides in the "Land of Oz" so hopefully some of the other areas will have a bit of a face-lift in the closed season too. Our accommodation experience was disappointing and I would think twice before coming back for an overnight, though we will be back at some point as our kids love the rides at Gulliver's.
