Exploring Shakespeare’s Home Town...
The Almshouses的点评
点评：This row of early-15th century houses still looks much like it would have in Shakespeare’s day. They would have had thatched roofs back then but otherwise, they weren’t so very different.
Built around 1428, they had already been standing for 130+ years when Shakespeare was a boy. He would have walked past them often on his way to and from the Guildhall Grammar School next door.
Built by the Guild of the Holy Cross (a medieval religious/semi-political group who carried great sway in the town), the almshouses provided charitable housing. In the days when there was no government welfare, those who fell on hard times through illness, poverty or old age often ended up in the workhouse. You would have been extremely lucky to be given one of these houses.
The houses are very striking, with half timbered facades that were characteristic of medieval buildings. Dark wooden beams contrast against white walls and the windows mostly have lead glazing. The upper storey juts out over the lower storey in a lopsided sort of way and the beams are all askew. It’s all a bit winky-wonky which gives them a particular charm.
Admittedly, you can see many similar examples of half-timbered buildings throughout the town. However I think these are a bit special because it is such a lovely long row.
A plaque set unto the footpath out the front of the houses provides some historic information.
NOTE:
* If you follow the Historic Walking Trail from the official tourist site (‘Visit Stratford-upon-Avon’), then the Almshouses are #13 on the map.
* They are easily combined with a visit to Shakespeare’s New Place or Shakespeare’s Grammar School (1 minute walk away).
* You can’t go inside as they are private homes
