点评:An attractive old building, with a long and colourful history, that is clearly popular in the local area, and was full of families, on the day we visited.
We sensed grumbling, that from 2026, entry will no longer be covered by National Trust membership. Not being Trust members, this didn't bother us, and we found it value for money, considering the amount of time we spent there, exploring the house and gardens. The house is currently being restored after water damage to the roof, so not all of it was accessible, but there was still plenty to see, and the guides were helpful and well informed.
There are a couple of shops and a restaurant as well as a takeaway cafe. Food and drink from both catering outlets can be consumed at tables in a large courtyard area, which was busy on a weekday, following Easter, but not overcrowded.
The only thing that the National Trust, and the Throckmorton family, who will be taking over the running of their ancestral home, next year, need to take on board is the confusing ticket office.
We walked past a cabin, called a 'Welcome Centre', a short distance from the bridge that leads to the main property. The only people in it were sitting around a table, (as it turned out, joining the National Trust) so we assumed that it was some sort of information hub. We found ourselves being chased by a gentleman, who told us that we needed to pay, there. To judge by the fact that he was not in the cabin, itself, we got the impression that the poor man had to keep rounding up visitors in this fashion. To save his legs and the embarrassment of people like ourselves, might we suggest better signposting, or a redesign of the entrance?
