An NTS gem where ‘The Secret Garden’ meets ‘Alice in Wonderland’!

点评：We had an excellent visit to Greenbank on what was probably their busiest day of the year - Easter Sunday, where there were a lot of activities going on! However, the ambiance was one of ‘timeless summer fete in stately home gardens’ and despite there being a lot of families there, the NTS team was coping well and it really didn’t feel mobbed! For most of the rest of the year, the ambiance will be somewhat different!
This place is a real find, located on the south side of Glasgow right on the edge of lovely surrounding farmland. Surrounded by deciduous woodland, the main feature is a 2.5 acre walled garden, divided into a series of ‘rooms ‘, each one different from the previous but linked by yew hedging, grass paths and fine flagstones. There is a lot of horticultural interest here, even in mid April with some very fine flowering shrubs, lovely trees, an amazing array of daffodils and burgeoning herbaceous borders. There are lovely ponds, an alpine scree and a vegetable garden, so something for every gardener in this beautifully cared for but not clinical garden.
But if you’re not a gardener, and have a family in tow, you will love ‘The Secret Garden meets Alice in Wonderland’ vibe and enjoy the intrigue of discovering what lies round the next corner.
We spent the whole afternoon here, although a little of that time was spent eating our lunch in the lovely courtyard just outside the cafe and shop. All very National Trust!
And look out for the unusual owl…!
