点评:The owner of this company is a contemptuous, extremely arrogant and lying man but let the facts speak for themselves.
We booked a ride for our family of 4 as a birthday celebration for my son who was turning 9. The ride’s leaders, Crystal and Hannah were patient and kind in helping our son overcome his initial fear of the horse.
Part-way through the ride, the following incident occurred: The horse I was on came abreast of my daughter’s horse. There was no aggression, no speed and no threat to the other horse involved; just a horse walking alongside another horse. Our daughter’s horse reared up towards my horse and bit her on the thigh. It was incredibly painful. It left an enormous and incredibly tender bruise.
This incident should not have happened. We are all inexperienced riders. Three of us had never even sat on a horse. We made this clear, both when booking, and also prior to starting the ride. Horse Safety Australia beginner ride best practice guide indicates that riders need to show they can successfully give basic instructions to a horse such as start, stop etc prior to departure on a trail ride. This did not occur prior to our ride at Slickers Horse Riding.
Not only did the physical injury impact on my enjoyment of the ride, thereafter I felt extremely anxious, as did my daughter, about the potential for another incident. While I minimised expressing my anxiety so as not to cause panic to my daughter and son, I was quite scared that my horse would approach the other horse again, triggering a further incident. As completely inexperienced riders, the control you have over a horse is very limited, especially in a situation where one horse feels provoked to attack another horse.
Following this incident, our group was approached in a field by a horse unknown to the ride’s leaders. This horse seemed intent on “making trouble” in the words of one of the leaders. This felt very threatening to us, particularly after the incident that had just occurred. The ride leader managed to keep the horse at bay, however it was persistent and to have it circling us, trying to approach caused for some very tense minutes. Our daughter’s horse had already shown it was temperamental and easily triggered. Had it reacted to other horse, there may have been an additional incident. It was enough however to cause us huge anxiety. Horses are huge powerful animals and this was a threatening situation. I was very keen to have the ride end. So, too, my daughter.
At the end of the ride,we thanked the ride leaders for the ride and did not express our true feelings to them as none of what occurred was their fault. It was acknowledged by the instructors that it was “not the best ride”. They, however, did their best, given the factors that should have been controlled for, but weren’t. It was suggested to us by the ride leaders that we should have perhaps been booked onto a ride at Kurwongbah instead. The website is confusing and it is not clear what the best ride is for absolute beginners. I trusted that when she made the initial enquiry with Natasha, she would have advised the most suitable ride and location given I said we were all beginners.
Being asked for proof of payment is really quite extraordinary after the experience we had involving an injury to me which caused significant distress to both me and my daughter. We should have been offered a refund, not chased for money. They should have concerned themselves with conducting an investigation into the incident, not chasing money. Their obligation to provide a safe environment and render services with due care and skill was not met and given this, they should not have been chasing money!!
We were very surprised and disappointed about the absence of contact from the business following this incident in which I was physically injured by one of the business’ horses. There was no incident report completed and no follow-up with us about this incident. The ride leader was asked to contact us about proof of payment (the ride was paid for prior to commencing the ride but we were asked for “proof” after the fact). Ensuring they had received payment from us was obviously the main priority, not ensuring that their duty of care obligations to us and to other riders in the future was met. Imagine contacting us after an incident like this to make sure we had paid? The ride should have been refunded! Not this money-focused man, Daryl. His daughter was the ride leader.
Following an incident where a customer has been bitten by a horse, it seems completely obvious from a customer care and risk mitigation point of view, not to mention basic professional courtesy, to at least contact the customer to check on their welfare and discuss the incident in more detail. Not Daryl. My partner contacted him by email. He deigned to not respond by email (deliberately avoiding putting anything in writing) and instead phoned me.
Daryl was aggressive, condescending and obfuscating in his manner, denying all responsibility and instead blaming me for apparently allowing the other horse to rear up and bite me. He also denied it would have reared up. Seriously. Despite agreeing to providing me a copy of the waiver we signed, Daryl simply did not provide it despite our following up the matter with him. This fact alone brings into question his personal or professional integrity. The man was so spineless as to agree to provide a copy of the paperwork we entitled to over the phone, but then not follow through and ignore our correspondence asking him again for it. We were entitled to it but he was too cowardly to provide it, fearing court action presumably. This is why I have said he was a liar - he undertook to send me a copy of the wavier we signed with apparently no intention to actually provide it.
Suffice to say this incident should never have happened. This business should know the temperaments of your horses intimately and also know how they work with each other. Horses should match the level of the experience of the riders. My text to Natasha stated that, "None of us have experience horse rising".
Horses that have difficult temperaments, tend towards being unpredictable, are nervous or reactive should NOT be allocated to beginners. Horse rides should not be led through fields where there are horses not known to the instructors, as the temperament and behaviour of those horses is unknown and therefore presents a risk to riders. As with dogs, horses that unharnessed can be confrontational with hoses that are harnessed. This is fundamental to Slickers’ duty of care in providing a safe environment for horse rides to occur, and allowing for your customers to have a positive experience.
The Safe Work Australia guide to managing risks when new and inexperienced persons interact with horses indicates that beginners should be given a quiet and steady horse and not one that is nervous, reactive, non-compliant and unresponsive. Our horses varied in their responsiveness to commands, but some refused to follow instruction requiring the trail leaders to step in. Even then, they were slow to do what was being asked. Safe Work also advises that horses should be thoroughly tested both in the area to be ridden and for their social behaviour as part of the herd.
Furthermore, Horse Safety Australia indicates that a horse should be well socialised with other horses and tested for any behavioural issues. It also says that horses must not be used for rides if they are aggressive to other horses, stumble, buck, bite or over react. Our horses did stumble (the terrain was very steep and rocky in places) and I would suggest that the horse that bit me did over-react.
Slickers fails to follow the above guidelines. Unsurprisingly, Slickers is not a member of Horse Safety Australia. There are a number of references to horses biting in regards to this business in Trip Advisor reviews, so this is not a one-off incident.
I spoke to the owner of a reputable horse riding school who is a member of Horse Safety Australia (unlike Slickers) who advised me that they had never once had an incident of a horse biting a rider in all their years of business. He said is a matter of horse education and that it is not feasible to keep 200 horses properly trained. (This was the number of horses Daryl told me he has). I also spoke to someone from Horse Safety Australia who said an incident of rearing and biting should NEVER occur and this reflects poor choice of horse by the business and that horses that are harnessed should NEVER go through a field where there are horses on the loose.
The arrogance of this man to not even offer an apology, just an outright refusal to take any responsibility whatsoever. I think this speaks to the total absence of any personal or professional integrity. And I see he demands cash payment so it would appear he may be trying to avoid paying tax as well. What a scoundrel.
