点评:We’ve been to Castleton a few times before, and visited other caverns but this was our first visit to this one. The cavern used to be used by rope makers who lived and worked there making ropes for the miners.
It’s a guided tour which starts off with a demonstration of rope making, before taking you into the cavern itself with your guide telling you stories about the history of the place as well as pointing out features of the cave. The tour lasted about an hour and was interesting very interesting. The guide was funny and kept everyone engaged throughout.
It is a cave, so be aware that it can be damp, a bit chilly, and the ground can be a bit uneven, so dress accordingly with sensible shoes.
The website describes the tour as “The tour is fairly undemanding on foot. There are a few steps with hand rails. Nothing too steep. The floor can be wet and uneven in places.” And “We have one small 30m section of cave where you will need to bend over to navigate through” and this is the reason we picked this one. While there are only a few steps, which makes this tour much less demanding than some of the other caverns here. The small section where you have to bend over does require you to bend down to around four feet, and walk for a fair way through a tunnel. I had a little trouble with this, so I would suggest anyone very tall or with back trouble should probably try another cavern
