点评：I loved this visit for multiple reasons ... It's a Caravaggio - Burial of St Lucy (1608) It's WAY out of the touristy parts of Ortigia so there's hardly any crowd and the church visit and mausoleum visit is free. The area round the church is very real and authentic. We walked there on a warm sunny October morning, and got to see real Syracuse.
The church is handsome, with a large open square in front of it. Inside the building is quite simple and the Caravaggio is hanging where it was intended, above the altar. It's quite dark so initially I was disappointed but there is a facility to pay €1 and have the painting illuminated for 4 mins. Which lots of people did - so if you wait long enough you don't even need to pay the €1. However - a MUST SEE is the catacombs which you do have to pay for: 30 min tour, with a hard hat, and it's stunning.
Intrigued to read that there is an argument about moving the painting to Ortigia where 1000s more tourists will see it. (And pay €10 like in Malta...) I loved that it's in the church it was painted for, and outside the tourist centre - it was worth the walk, the authenticity of the building and the city around it, and the lack of tourists (even tho of course I am a tourist)
