点评:It was a drizzly day when we went which I suppose might have contributed to the tone of this review but the weather doesn't normally affect our enjoyment of a day out. We stated with coffee and scone, as you do, and that was good as usual. We then went round the house. There were only guided tours that day and only to the ground floor as conservation work was going on elswhere.
Our guides were full of information but we left feeling that we hadn't learnt much about the house's history. It had had a mixed past with lots of owners, although one family stayed for several generations. It didn't seem to have a character at all. Parts had been demolished, the kitchen and the orangery, prior to the listing of the house in the 1950s. The makeshift kitchen installed by the then owner had been taken out by the NT to reveal an earlier elaborate room - it seemd like the house just didn't gell.
We did the outside walks, including up to the folly on the hill. On the way back from that we found that the bridge along the route had been closed and we had to retrace our steps a long way. This resulted in us coming up against locked and then a barred gate and a significant extra amount of walking in the rain.
Sorry but Wimpole just didn't do anything for us.
(PS. we visited nearby Anglesey Abbey the next day and that was just amazing.)
