点评:We went for the tour of the house given by friendly and knowledgeable curator Patrick. They're run on summer weekends, best to book via the website. Space is limited as the house is small.
The novel Tristram Shandy is full of digressions, and the tour was full of fascinating ones, such as the history of Sterne guiding the first part of TS through the printing so that layout and "illustrations" were done exactly right.
The tour was brilliant. Like many readers I've never managed to finish TS, but we were all energised to try again.
Because Patrick had so much of interest to tell and show us, the tour lasted over an hour.
There is a small shop with a quirky (obviously!) selection of second hand books that we wanted to take home by the armful.
Weather was too bad to see the garden. Parking is limited, probably best to park by the Fauconberg Arms in the village and walk, a few hundred yards up the road.
There are no refreshments at Shandy Hall (The Fauconberg was good), and there is just one basic WC.
For lovers of literature, this is an unusual and charming treat.
